60 Second Interview
Why are you standing for Parliament?
This is the first time I have stood for Parliament. It's a huge commitment and a decision I didn't take quickly. But I've always been interested in politics and the way our country is governed. Certain things in Britain today make me mad and I feel the only way to get things changed is to get involved.
Why are you standing in Caerphilly?
I put my name forward, together with a large group of other potential candidates. I was honoured to be selected by members of the Association and have received a wonderful welcome from everyone in Caerphilly. This is a special place and it's a huge privilege for whoever is the elected Member of Parliament.
What matters most in Caerphilly?
Caerphilly is changing and like most places in Britain, we have real problems with young people, drugs and anti-social behaviour. There are no easy solutions, but we do have to stand up for what's right and fight for the type of society we want. In Caerphilly our police do an amazing job with very limited resources. Conservatives would provide more Police officers - on the ground where we need them. We can make a difference and improve the places where we live.
What do you do on a Saturday evening in Caerphilly?
My wife Emma and I enjoy Indian food. If we have the chance, we go to The Raj of India at 8 Market Street. It's great food with a view of the Castle. Sikandar Miah, the owner, is always there to welcome us and to recommend his special dishes of the day.
How do you relax?
I like to be outside and walking in the countryside. During the week, I spend a lot of time in front of computers inside an office building. So nothing beats being in the fresh air, walking and taking in the countryside. Last weekend Emma and I walked up Caerphilly Mountain - for the best view in South Wales. We then treated ourselves to one of the famous bacon sandwiches served in the car park!
What's the last film you've seen?
I watched the original Star Wars film on DVD. I will never forget seeing this for the first time in 1976. It was breathtaking, with amazing special effects and an enchanting story. It also has a happy ending!
How do you keep fit?
Electioneering is a great way to keep in shape. When canvassing we literally walk miles! In Caerphilly, the facilities at the Recreation Centre are excellent and I should think about joining the gym there. But with so little free time, I think I'll settle for walks and go easy on the pub lunches!
